Happy Thanksgiving! Today is your day to spend time with family, eat a fabulous feast, and, most importantly, reflect on your gratitude for the important things in life. Dr. Flanagan and our team help patients preserve and improve their smiles every day at our Houston, TX dental practice. In our line of work, we’re always in awe of what teeth can do and how a healthy smile can transform a person’s life. In honor of Thanksgiving, this week’s special holiday blog is a compilation of the top five reasons you should be thankful for your teeth.
1. They’re one of your most distinguishing features.
Most likely, one of the first things people notice about you is your smile. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s 2012 Survey:
- 99.7 percent of Americans “believe a smile is an important social asset”
- 74 percent of survey respondents “[believe] an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chances for career success”
- 96 percent “of adults believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex”
Your pearly whites can affect your quality of life, from your dating prospects to your professional achievements.
2. Their hard work can improve your health and fitness.
Your teeth do the grunt work of grinding your food so you can easily digest it for good nutrition. As Health Extremist blogger Lori explains, “thoroughly chewing each bite” of your food can improve your saliva production and help your body better break down important proteins. She lists the benefits of proper chewing: “improved digestion, increased absorption of nutrients, reduced diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, [and] nausea, reduced bloating and gas, [and] weight loss.” As you indulge in your magnificent meal, take a moment to remember the teeth that let you do so and recognize their value!
3. They help you speak.
Thanksgiving is a great time to catch up with friends and family whom you don’t always see. In addition, many people make it a tradition to go around the table and discuss what everyone has to be thankful for. No matter what you’re up to today, remember that you couldn’t speak nearly as well without your teeth. If you don’t believe us, just try to get out a coherent sentence without tapping your teeth together or touching your tongue to them.
4. They’re actually relatively easy to maintain with proper care.
If you’re willing to do your due diligence, it’s actually fairly easy to keep your teeth clean and healthy. We recommend that you brush your teeth for at least two minutes at least twice per day, floss at least once a day, and rinse with mouthwash. Of course, you should also eat a balanced diet, drink plenty of water, and see Dr. Flanagan for biannual cleanings and examinations.
5. You can make the most of them with our general and cosmetic treatments.
With modern dentistry, you can repair problems with your teeth and enhance the aspects you love. Dr. Flanagan can perform a wide range of general and cosmetic procedures to help you enjoy a smile you can appreciate.
